I loathe Wurd. I have a burning hatred and revulsion that makes Islamofascism seem tame by comparison. Doing layouts in Word is like rappelling down a barbed-wire rope in a Speedo. I’d rather crawl naked through broken glass or have a door closed on my fingers.

As someone who makes type I’ve seen my work get simpler and more neutral as the years go by. As I see it, one major dilemma facing type designers is balancing the need to make type that is true to one’s personality vs making type with that allows the graphic designer to place their personality in the work.

Take away imagination, pity, hope, history, belief and all the other intangibles from humanity, and all you have left is an ape that falls out of trees a lot (with apologies to Terry Pratchett).

Geometry can produce legible letter but art alone makes them beautiful. Art begins where geometry ends, and imparts to letters a character transcending mere measurement.
