Yesterday I mentioned to my students at Binghamton University the etymology of the Turkish word for “design.” (I do remember the moment I discover a new etymology as a special moment in time — like when I learned the Finnish for “human being.”)It is a very interesting word game which involves both design (tasarım) & concern (tasa). It is something design students and we all should see — design as a concern —, a problem which deserves and needs to be solved. If it is not a solution then there is no concern going on; therefore no design. There is also the verb tasarlamak, that translates into “postulating” or creating a future vision, that completes the circle.
